This image popped up on Fiona Apple’s Facebook page a few minutes ago, along with a link to the handwritten lyrics. Could it mean “Every Single Night” will be The Idler Wheel’s lead single? It would be a wise choice, since the live version sounds pretty Florence-and-the-Machiney, and Flo has been nominated for no less than 5 dozen awards in the past 3 years.
I’m quite sure this is Fiona’s own artwork, as well. Stylistically, it fits with her original art that’s been showcased in music videos like “Limp” and that appeared on the wall in Claudia’s apartment in Magnolia. I just spent the past 26 minutes searching for these images so I could prove it to you, but haven’t found them yet. If anyone has any JPEGs, please send them!

And how, it’s the cover art for Fiona Apple’s new album, The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do. Fi’s cranked up the cray with this fractal self-portrait that totally makes sense with some of The Idler Wheel’s lyrical content, like “every single night’s a fight with my brain” (“Every Single Night”) and “while you were watching someone else, I stared at you and cut myself” (“Valentine”).
Fiona* posted the image on her Facebook page today, along with an official release date - June 26, 2012 - and the album’s track listing:
01 Every Single Night 02 Daredevil 03 Valentine 04 Jonathan 05 Left Alone 06 Werewolf 07 Periphery 08 Regret 09 Anything We Want 10 Hot Knife
*”Fiona Apple” the brand, not Fiona Apple the person. With the numerous times she’s said she avoids going online and/or reading any press about herself, I’m confident the artist is not the OP.

Caddis fly larvae are known to incorporate bits of whatever they can find into their cocoons, be it fish bone or bits of leaves. Hubert Duprat gave them gold, turquoise, gems and pearls.

designer buggies!  How cool.

this is pretty profound

This is cool but also disgusting and I almost can’t look at it. I hate bugs.

Ohay, a new Red Hot Chili Peppers video came out today. It’s for “Monarchy of Roses,” the first track off the Peppers’ new album, “I’m With You.” The Marc Klasfeld-directed video combines black and white stop motion photography with words and illustration. The phrases scrawled across the screen in juxtaposition to the lyrics sung by Anthony Kiedis are sometimes ironic, sometimes ambiguous, a nod to the work of contemporary artist Raymond Pettibon.

Flea has been tweeting today about the video. He says, “He is an artist I have loved since I was a teenager. Raymond Pettibon’s art was first seen as part of the hardcore punk rock scene in L.A. around 1980. He did all the art for Black Flag. He has since gone on to have a transcendently beautiful and dynamic art career. Raymond Pettibon means a lot to us we are honored to have made this collaboration with him. Raymond also did incredible album covers for The Minutemen and Firehose.”

This isn’t the first time the Chili Peppers have drawn inspiration from visual artists for their music videos. The awesome “Can’t Stop” video is based on Erwin Wurm’s “One Minute Sculptures,” and the video for “Otherside” is an ode to German expressionist filmmaker Robert Wiene and the work of M. C. Escher. The straight story on the band’s association with street artist Mr. Brainwash, however, is still unknown.

I feel slightly dangerously crazy for admitting this, but I’ve been enjoying this blog called Things Organized Neatly.

People of Costa Mesa: This mural and other artwork by Brandon Boyd is on display beginning today at H Space Gallery. Yes, that Brandon Boyd, but that’s not what is important right now. What’s important is that his art is rad, this show’s theme is a meditation on ocean pollution, and it benefits the H.O.P.E. Foundation, which supports education and peace programs in the First and Third Worlds.
