In response to the fatal shooting of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin, the Red Hot Chili Peppers donned custom-made hoodies on stage in Tampa last night. The shirts bear Martin’s name and the phrase “stand what ground” - a reference to Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, which states that deadly force used in self-defense does not necessitate arrest. The shooter, George Zimmerman, claims he shot in self-defense after telling police that Martin, who was walking down the street wearing a hoodie, looked “like he is up to no good.”
Flea tweeted the above close-up of the hoodie with the caption, “The hoodies we are giving away to friends in Florida who want em,” and later adding, “Sorry we only made a couple Hun of the hoodies to give away. Don’t wanna sell em. My little heart is happy people like em.”
Here’s a pic of the band in their hoodies on stage in Tampa last night, the opening night of their 2012 world tour.  The tour was set to begin January 20, but was postponed after Anthony Kiedis sustained a pretty gruesome-sounding foot injury. The full schedule of U.S. and European dates is available here.

“Look Around” - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Official video

by http://lauklinghoffer.tumblr.com/

Oh hey, it’s a new Red Hot Chili Peppers video. It’s kind of embarrassing. Anthony Kiedis lasts max 20 seconds before taking his shirt off, and also I’m incredibly uncomfortable with the fact that he’s got his 4-year-old son in this video. Why is the kid there? He functions as nothing more than a prop. Moreover, there are seven other RHCP offspring, and they aren’t in this video. Don’t get all Katherine Heigl on me, AK!

Anyway, this video from director Robert Hales shows each band member performing in a different room. Fan site Stadium Arcadium reports that the video was shot in just four takes (most music video shoots last 12-18 hours), with all four sets filmed simultaneously.

Anthony Kiedis sings in a red room outfitted with pictures of himself on the wall, model of the moment Charlotte Free, his Rhodesian Ridgeback (Sammi or Katie?) and his son, Everly Bear. Chad Smith drums alone in a bathroom with a punching bag. Josh Klinghoffer sits in a windowless, gray room with one chair and a small lamp. Flea’s space looks the most alive and lived-in, a fully-furnished space with art, records and a spunky, blue-haired female companion to boot. I’m not 100% sure what the band is trying to tell us about their personalities, but of all the rooms in this video, Flea’s is the place to be. Stadium Arcadium reports that an interactive version of this video is on the way - in it, you can choose which room to view, and switch rooms as you like. I wonder if they’ll be collecting data to find out who the most popular Pepper is these days.

A Chili Peppers photo I’ve never seen before (I’ve seen lots). Definitely circa 1990/1991. Nice shirt, Chadboy.

I think I have to turn in my badge or something. I have been a Chili Peppers fan since I was about 12, and I’ve never heard this cover of Hendrix’s “Little Miss Lover” before. This audio falls a bit flat, but I can tell that a live performance of this when it was recorded in 1990/91 would have been bursting with the Chili Peppers’ unmistakable chaotic sexfunk energy.

Ohay, a new Red Hot Chili Peppers video came out today. It’s for “Monarchy of Roses,” the first track off the Peppers’ new album, “I’m With You.” The Marc Klasfeld-directed video combines black and white stop motion photography with words and illustration. The phrases scrawled across the screen in juxtaposition to the lyrics sung by Anthony Kiedis are sometimes ironic, sometimes ambiguous, a nod to the work of contemporary artist Raymond Pettibon.

Flea has been tweeting today about the video. He says, “He is an artist I have loved since I was a teenager. Raymond Pettibon’s art was first seen as part of the hardcore punk rock scene in L.A. around 1980. He did all the art for Black Flag. He has since gone on to have a transcendently beautiful and dynamic art career. Raymond Pettibon means a lot to us we are honored to have made this collaboration with him. Raymond also did incredible album covers for The Minutemen and Firehose.”

This isn’t the first time the Chili Peppers have drawn inspiration from visual artists for their music videos. The awesome “Can’t Stop” video is based on Erwin Wurm’s “One Minute Sculptures,” and the video for “Otherside” is an ode to German expressionist filmmaker Robert Wiene and the work of M. C. Escher. The straight story on the band’s association with street artist Mr. Brainwash, however, is still unknown.

Here’s a pretty mind-blowing clip of the Red Hot Chili Peppers singing “Sex Rap” (yes, that’s the real title of a real song they really recorded) on “The James Whale Radio Show” circa 1990. After performing the extremely NSFW-but-LOL song a capella on their knees, the guys get a bit friendly with the host’s alleged fiancée. This video is basically proof that Anthony Kiedis didn’t lie about all the drugs (or the sex) in his autobiography.
