Gaultier goes Winehouse for SS2012

Jean Paul Gaultier has always been one of my favorite fashion designers, for his excellent choice in textiles and also for his unabashed rock ‘n’ roll edge. His spring/summer 2012 runway show in Paris on Wednesday revealed that ruminations of the “Rehab” singer inspired this couture collection, which is actually a really awesome and beautiful thing to pay tribute to her like that, if the “inspiration” weren’t so MERCILESSLY AND REPEATEDLY BEATING US OVER THE HEAD. I mean really. Did he have to do the clothes plus the hair plus the makeup plus the music?? Two out of the four and TRUST ME, J.P.G., WE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN IT.

I understand that the inventor of Madonna’s cone bra has never been known for his subtlety, but this kind of clodding canonization quickly goes from tribute to tawdry. Check out this video footage of the runway show. A little heavy-handed, no?

Amy Winehouse’s cover of Lesley Gore’s 1963 classic “It’s My Party” leaked to the Internets yesterday, a week before its official release.

The song, produced by Winehouse stalwart Mark Ronson, stays true to the trumpet-driven, girl-group era original, save for Winehouse’s husky and at times mush-mouthed vocals. Winehouse and Ronson also trade a bit of Gore’s innocent sparkle for something more befitting of Winehouse’s infamous image. “Don’t you know sisters come before carpet burns and blisters/ I learned the hard way, hun,” she preaches during the bridge.

“It’s My Party” will appear on Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, a compilation album curated by Quincy Jones.  The album, which also features Q-approved cover tunes from Usher, Akon, Snoop Dogg and Mary J. Blige, hits stores November 9.

Winehouse, whose struggles with substance abuse have garnered just as much attention as her Grammy award-winning music, has been laying low since entering rehab in 2008.  The “Rehab” singer announced plans for a comeback this summer, saying her long-awaited follow-up to 2006’s Back to Black will be out by January 2011. Producer Mark Ronson, however, says he has yet to begin working with Winehouse on her album.
