Fiona Apple at Largo: 'My new songs have been done for a year'

Zomg, could it be true? In this Grantland blog post about Fiona Apple’s appearance at L.A.’s Club Largo last night, Jay Caspian Kang pushes past Jon Brion’s “ejaculatory” guitar playing and gets right to the point - Apple’s voice. She writes, “Apple’s voice on Tidal was deep and carried an air of contempt. The new Apple had less power, but as she sang through a series of very old covers — the sort of songs that are played on 45s in stores that only sell very expensive mid-century modern furniture.”
What Kang means by that is Fiona has been killing it with her selection of jazz standards. Although Apple’s appearances at the club are sporadic and unannounced, she’s been playing a sweet selection of covers at Largo for the past seven years.
But let’s get to the real point, here: on stage last night, Apple revealed that her new songs have been finished “for a fucking year,” which Brion promptly punctuated with, “Not her fault!”
Is this Extraordinary Machine part deux, in which Apple’s demos are again shelved and recording dollars are withheld by Sony for an undisclosed reason they will later claim was a miscommunication? The answer: I don’t know, but I would like to hear these songs now, please.
